LSC 360 students produce radio segments for WSUM 91.7 FM

Feature segments produced by LSC students will air on UW-Madison’s student radio station WSUM 91.7FM the week of May 20th. The segments, each around nine minutes long, were produced as group projects by students enrolled in Larry Meiller’s “Information Radio” course, LSC 360, this spring.

wsum-logoThe hands-on course focuses on the basics of information radio, from interviewing and voicing skills to writing for broadcast, and has been a highly popular class over the years. Students use three state of the art audio production labs in Hiram Smith to produce news stories, features, advertisements and for the final project, a half-hour long show on an informational topic of their choice. The shows this semester focused on a range of topics including farm safety, environmental issues in Wisconsin, safety at music festivals, social media in business and sports medicine. Until now, the student’s work has only been played in front of the class.

This spring, for the first time, the students have produced informational segments that will air on the radio as part of a special series called “LSC 360 Presents.” For this project the students produced segments for broadcast using material from their final projects and worked closely with teaching assistant, LSC master’s student Tegan Wendland, to produce professional pieces for air. Each segment focuses on a different theme and includes an interview with an expert in the field, such as LSC Instructor Don Stanley on the importance of blogging and UW-Madison Sports Nutritionist Karla Horsfall on student health.

Tune in to 91.7FM in Madison for the eight student-produced segments, which will air at 3 p.m. the week of May 20th and repeat the week of May 27th at 1 p.m. daily. The segments were produced by LSC 360 students Jacob Brey, Carrie Jo Leum, Alison Brookins, AJ Fenton, Hannah Gerbitz, Ryan Groy, Adam Kim, Derek Lee, Tyler Marz, Christine McFarland, Joe McNamara, Janki Patel, Josh Pepra, Alex Rigsby, Katie Sonnefeldt, Mary Sussman and Patrick Berthiaume.
