This scholarship was established by colleagues of Brian Howell, a journalist at the Wisconsin State Journal and the editor of Madison Magazine. Howell was a popular LSC instructor and was an inspiration to his students. Raised on a family farm, he was passionate about the need to educate Wisconsin’s youth in new communication and life sciences technologies.
When Brian passed away in 2003, his media colleagues established the Brian Howell Scholarship, which is awarded to a student in the LSC 640 capstone.
Congratulations to our 2021-2022 Howell scholarship recipient!

This scholarship is a huge honor, and I am so grateful for what it will do for my nursing education. Because of this, I will be able to focus more time on clinical work, assessment skills, and preparing to take the NCLEX in January. Again, thank you!
Future goals: My future plans include obtaining my Master’s in Nursing through the direct entry program at Alverno College to become a specialized Nurse Practitioner. I am currently in my first semester of the Master’s program, and I absolutely love it. Once I finish my Master’s next August, I plan to move to Florida and get a job at one of the major hospitals in Fort Lauderdale or Miami.
