Make Your Major Go Further with Life Sciences Communication

Every field needs people who can make complex ideas understandable, meaningful, and engaging. Whether you’re studying biology, business, environmental science, or something entirely different, knowing how to communicate your expertise can help you make a greater impact. That’s what makes Life Sciences Communication (LSC) at UW–Madison such a valuable addition to your education.

By adding an LSC double major or a Science Communication certificate, you can learn to understand audiences, craft compelling messages, and connect people with information that matters. From explaining research to advocating for a cause, these skills complement your interests and prepare you to share your knowledge with the world. LSC’s courses help you put those skills into practice, combining creative projects with an understanding of what makes communication effective.

Want to create social media content that connects with an audience or design a website that makes information easy to find? In Social Media for the Sciences (LSC 432), students learn to identify audiences, develop content strategies, and evaluate their impact. Web Design for the Sciences (LSC 532) explores how to build effective, user-friendly websites, while courses in digital and print media design, video production, and podcasting offer additional ways to bring ideas to life.

LSC also helps students understand the strategy behind effective communication. Marketing Communication for the Sciences (LSC 270) explores how to connect products and initiatives with specific audiences, while courses such as Science, Media and Society (LSC 251) and Misinformation, Fake News, and Correcting False Beliefs about Science (LSC 340) examine how people encounter and interpret information. Together, these courses help students become thoughtful communicators who can choose the right message, format, and approach for the people they want to reach.
