Dexter Patterson is a seasoned educator and mentor in life sciences communication. Dexter teaches video, radio/podcasting, social media, and documentary photography in the Department of Life Sciences Communication to undergraduate and graduate students, including those in the Science Communication Ph.D. program. With over fifteen years of experience, he has honed his skills as a visual storyteller, social media expert, radio host, and podcaster. Patterson, an alumnus of the LSC department, has a master’s degree in communications and media studies from Purdue University.

His love for photography is evident in his over a decade of professional experience, specializing in live sports and event photography. However, his true passion lies in capturing the beauty of birds, turning bird photography into a meaningful form of storytelling. He co-founded the BIPOC Birding Club of Wisconsin, where he plays a crucial role as a mentor, providing guidance and support and sharing his knowledge and love for birds while fostering an inclusive community for club members.

Patterson’s debut book, Birds of the Great Lake, helps readers identify more than 100 commonly occurring birds in the Great Lakes region, with an emphasis on best practices to empower conservation and ensure birding continues for years to come.
