Mikihito Tanaka is a current LSC Visiting Professor from Tokyo, Japan. He is a Professor of Science and Media Studies in the Journalism School within the Graduate School of Political Science at Waseda University. He earned his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Tokyo, and has more than 20 years of experience as a writer and journalist in addition to his academic career.

Currently, he carries out research related to issues between science and society, social media, and web journalism. He is a founding member and research manager of the Science Media Centre of Japan (SMCJ). As a social science researcher with a background in life sciences, Tanaka has many years of experience in inter-disciplinal research and its implementation into society. In 2011, his work with the SMCJ team was highly acclaimed for providing the public with evidence-based scientific information during the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident. His team’s ability to give scientists a platform to voice their opinion to the media during a time where scientific debate regarding radiation was in chaos has been recognized by many, including an award from the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, Tanaka has been assigned as a member of the COVID-19 Expert Advisory Board in the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and as a risk communication advisor for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. He has also been a member of the COVID-19 Public Advisory Group of Experts. Throughout these platforms, Tanaka is advising and analyzing risk communication during the COVID-19 pandemic.
