lsc researchers publish on u.s. news coverage of neuroscience nanotechnology in the yearbook of nanotechnology in society

LSC researchers, lead by doctoral student Doo-Hun Choi, co-authoring with Anthony Dudo, now Assistant Professor of Advertising and Public Relations at the University of Texas-Austin and Dietram A. Scheufele, John E. Ross Professor of Science Communication, have a chapter in the 2013 Yearbook of Nanotechnology in Society, Nanotechnology, the Brain, and the Future, edited by Sean A. Hays, Jason Scott Robert, Clark A. Miller and Ira Bennett.

doo-hunIn their chapter, “U.S. News Coverage of Neuroscience Nanotechnology: How U.S. Newspapers Have Covered Neuroscience Nanotechnology During the Last Decade,” to understand how media contribute to opinion formation about neuroscience nanotechnology, the authors explore the evolution of U.S. newspaper coverage of of the issue over time. In a content analysis they examine the amount of coverage, authorship patterns and thematic emphases in journalistic accounts of this specific application of nanotechnology. The findings suggest that U.S. newspaper coverage has, so far, been mostly event-driven and focused on the potential benefits of neuroscience nanotechnology.

This research is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation (Grant No. SES-0531194). Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.
