Background
I am an assistant professor in the Department of Life Sciences Communication, affiliated with the Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program. I teach courses in communication theory and research, with particular emphasis in new media.
My research program focuses on mass media, interpersonal communications, public opinion and collective action. I have international experience working both as a researcher and a journalist in Latin America. My research involves how mass media, conversations and perceptions of media effects result in attitudes and behaviors. I have examined these questions in issues of community integration, scientific controversies and health related challenges, both in the United States and the Latin American contexts,.
My professional background includes: (a) publisher of a traditional and electronic “politics and culture” weekly newspaper in Colombia; (b) consultant for the United Nation’s development program; (c) communication strategist for a civic culture campaign targeting children; (d) communication consultant for public television in the United States; and, (e) communication consultant for blood collection agencies in Colombia.
