Jacob Stockinger is the arts and culture desk editor and the former features editor and former news and investigative reporter at The Capital Times newspaper here in Madison, Wisconsin. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in French from the UW and now teaches LSC 320 Feature Writing. His instruction focuses mainly on mass media and the arts, consumer affairs and the pedagogy of journalism.

A business writer, marketer and public relations consultant for nearly 20 years, Sarah began her career as a daily newspaper reporter. She left the newspaper business to pursue a position and an “education” in the political arena, working as a media analyst, writer and photographer in Wisconsin’s now-defunct Assembly Republican Caucus. Following a two-year stint as a business writer and managing editor of In Business magazine in Madison, she launched Sarah J. Fletcher & Associates (n.k.a. Botham, ink.), a marketing and public relations consulting firm that specializes in branding and strategic planning for business. She is also the vice president and director of marketing for Botham Vineyards & Winery, and writes a syndicated business opinion column, Entrepreneurial Spirit, which originates in The Capital Times, in Madison.
Sarah teaches LSC 431 Advertising in the Life Sciences, LSC 375 Relationship Marketing, LSC 530 Print & Electronic Media Design and occasionally, LSC 435 Integrated Marketing Communications, LSC 515 Public Information Campaigns & Programs, and LSC 111 Science & Technology Newswriting. As advisor for the student chapter of the National Agri-Marketing Association, Sarah oversees the organization’s activities and functions as coach of the NAMA student marketing team.
Don Stanley, Faculty Associate

In addition to teaching LSC 530 Print and Electronic Media Design and LSC 532 Web Design for the Sciences, Don Stanley works for the CALS Communication Program. He helps promote exciting undertakings and accomplishments via the CALS website. Having had earned his Master’s degree from LSC in 2000, Don brings many positive attributes to the department and is able to reflect upon his graduate work, purposeful, useful design and web usability, to fulfill his challenging tasks.

Michael Flaherty is president/CEO of Flaherty & Associates, a public relations company on the Capitol Square that specializes in public policy communications, media relations and strategic communications management for companies, organizations and government. He’s a former award-winning political and business/agricultural reporter for the Wisconsin State Journal, and was formerly a Washington correspondent for Ottaway Newspapers, a daily newspaper group owned by Dow Jones Inc. Flaherty teaches LSC 375 Public Relations, a special topics course for seniors and graduate students, and LSC 111 Science and Technology Newswriting.
Ron Seely

Ron Seely is the science and environment reporter for the Wisconsin State Journal, Madison ’s morning daily and the state’s second largest newspaper. He covers breaking science news from the University of Wisconsin and travels the state and the upper Midwest writing about current environmental issues. He teaches LSC 212 Introduction to Scientific Communication, focusing on ways to simplify and clarify science writing.
Susan L. Smith

Susan Lampert Smith teaches the introduction to science and technology news writing class for undergraduates. She is the metro columnist for the Wisconsin State Journal and has won multiple awards for column, feature and news writing from the Wisconsin Newspaper Association and the Milwaukee Press Club. She also won the national Agricultural Journalism Award for a story on kids and farm safety. She’s the author of two books, “Greetings from Wisconsin” and “Wisconsin Weekends with Kids” and a contributor to several others. She’s a 1982 graduate of this department, and runs an organic asparagus and produce farm near Blue Mounds with her husband, Matt, who is also a CALS graduate.

Tom Still

Tom Still is president of the Wisconsin Technology Council and its membership subsidiary, the Wisconsin Innovation Network. He is also a member of the Governor’s Economic Growth Council, the Industrial Advisory Board to the UW Madison College of Engineering, the Board of Visitors of the UW Extension, the Madison Economic Development Commission, the Dane County Economic Strategies Group and the UW Madison E-Commerce Institute.
Still has been the principal author or editor of Tech Council reports since 2002, such as “The Economic Value of Academic Research and Development in Wisconsin : and “Vision 2020: A Model of Wisconsin Economy.” He is also the former associate editor of the Wisconsin State Journal, where he was editor of the Opinion pages and responsible for other management duties. Previously, Still was chief political writer at the State Journal.
In addition, Still was co-founder of “We the People/Wisconsin,” which was the nation’s longest-running civic journalism project. He was also an organizer of the four Wisconsin Economic Summits, moderating the events in 2000-2003. He is also the co-author of “Hands On Environmentalism,” a book recently published by Encounter Books in San Francisco .
Still teaches “Issues in Science and Technology Communication,” a special topics course for seniors and graduate students.
