Background

Shepard serves the University of Wisconsin – Extension as State Program Leader and Assistant Dean and Director of Community, Natural Resources and Economic Development. He conducts research on water quality and agricultural practices and remains active as instructor in LSC by periodically teaching LSC 860 Science and Environment Communication.

A water quality expert, Shepard is perhaps as well known for his historic brewery walks and presentations. The Wisconsin Alumni Association, for example, invites him to present to alumni across the country on his hobby rather than his scholarly expertise. Shepard’s award-winning book, β€œ Wisconsin ’s Best Breweries and Brewpubs: Searching for the Perfect Pint, introduces readers to more than 60 breweries and brewpubs. It also provides Shepard’s personal ratings of at least 600 beers with taster’s charts for recording reader preferences.

β€œHe’s very engaging. People are interested in the topic and lobe to hear from him,” said Sarah Schutt, Senior Outreach Specialist for the Division of Continuing Studies and Director of WAA’s Life Long Learning Program.
