Background
I am an assistant professor in the Department of Life Sciences Communication, affiliated with the Latin American, Caribbean and Iberian Studies Program. I teach courses in communication theory and research, with particular emphasis in political communication and new media.
My research program focuses on mass media, interpersonal communications, public opinion and collective action. I have international experience working both as a researcher and a journalist in Latin America.
My research involves how mass media and political conversations can result in political attitudes and behaviors. I have examined these questions both in the United States and the Latin American contexts, and currently I am interested in extending this knowledge to scientific controversies (e.g. stem cell research) and health related challenges (e.g. blood donation)
My professional background includes: (a) publisher of a traditional and electronic “politics and culture” weekly newspaper in my native Colombia; (b) consultant for the United Nation’s development program, establishing quality of life monitoring systems; and (c) communication strategist for a civic culture campaign spearheaded by Bogota’s mayor; (d) communication consultant for political campaigns.
